Photography for Little People by Melanie
Where are you in the North East?
Chester le Street, Durham
As a mother of two amazing young men now I am aware that their early years seem like a very distant memory even though it really wasn’t that long ago. As I look back at their newborn portraits, I’ve come to the realization that these are even more special to me than I could have imagined, especially their little hands and feet I have framed. The value of a meaningful and beautiful image of your child grows exponentially over time. It never stops. It’s a moment that’s gone, but a memory that you get to keep forever.
My aim and my passion is to create amazing images that will make you happy for years to come. I love what I do and I take great pride in what I do. Every client I see is special and unique and has a story to tell, I want to help tell it, and make memories you can see and hold.
Operating from my studio in Chester le street, Durham, I provide a range of photography services for families across Durham and the surrounding areas. I specialise in newborn, baby and family photography, Photography for Little People are also the leading experts at taking impressions of little ones hands and feet. Our youngest was just 6 hours new.
Feel free to explore my website and if my work speaks to you, I would love for you to contact me to discuss a photo shoot experience for your family.
I am also one of the leading photography trainers in the UK specising in training new photographers within our franchise in the art of newborn safety as well as coaching them in their business.
When did you start your business and why?:
Photography for Little People was founded by mother and daughter team, Jan Massey and Melanie Kemp. The company quickly grew from renting a “barrow” in Gateshead’s MetroCentre shopping complex, to taking over a high profile unit there and has since photographed thousands of children. In 2007, Jan and Melanie were named North East Entrepreneur Woman in Retail and spurred on by the popularity of the service the mother and daughter team took the decision to franchise Photography for Little People. Our business proved so popular with families and we wanted to offer this to as many families as possible. Franchising Photography for Little People was the obvious answer as it is such a beautiful business and works perfectly around your family.
What gives your business the edge?:
Photography for Little People are renowned for their FREE photo shoot and no obligation, and pride themselves on the fact that we all LOVE capturing that magical moment in time! We excel at photographing bumps and newborns, little ones and toddlers, as well as family groups . My passion and speciality is working with newborns with many of my babies under 10 days new.
We are able to create beautiful, stunning pieces for your home, with your images, that have the WOW factor. Our impression range is the finest in the UK with the youngest baby to have their impressions taken being just 6 hours old!
What is the best thing about running your own business?:
Not only am I one of the franchisors I also run one of the franchise areas myself, we believe you should never ask anyone to do anything you are not prepared to do yourself.
I love working as a franchisee and the flexibility it offers my family. I love working with families especially capturing newborn images, I would never give this up. Being behind the camera and working with little ones is my little piece of heaven- I have been named The Baby Whisperer by my clients and friends.
And what is the worst!?:
I can’t think of one bad thing. Every day is different and every family I meet different, I love it.
Describe a typical day running your business and balancing family life:
To be honest I don’t have a typical day! Marketing is fun. I network and drink lots of coffee’s! The best bit is the photo shoots though………..I love being in my studio creating memories for my clients. If I have my franchisor hat on then a typical day includes either training or mentoring my franchisees.
How do you envisage your business changing over the next 5 years?:
Photography for Little People will continue to grow within the UK, we plan to establish our business throughout Hong Kong and Singapore and develop those countries as well as looking to expand into he USA.
Do you have any advice for other Women in or starting a business?:
Take that leap and follow your heart AND your head!
