Biographical Info

I created Do Tutu in 2014.  To be honest, I didn’t intend to start a business; I think it found and created me!

I had made dance costumes since 1987 for my children and a few others.  I even had a go at a full troupe of baby ballet tutus; that was a ‘Never again’ lesson learned!   I was a self-taught seamstress but had created wedding and prom dresses previously, but then lost my sewing motivation.

In early 2014 personally, I had a really bad year and lost my dad. I was in desperate need of some R&R and a bit of me time.  A series of events fell into place at just the right time.  My boss gave me back a week leave, and Aunty Pat gave me a cash gift.    I booked onto the Tutus That Dance workshop, initially as a week away in a hotel with strangers, just sewing and learning new skills.   I thought it might be a bit like ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’ but hopefully without the option to get voted out.

I met a great bunch of other mad tutu ladies and had a fabulous time with plenty of wine and gin.  I realised that I had known all the sewing skills, but the course gave me the reasons behind the designs and how a professional ballet tutu should be created with a bit of business advice.  That built up my self-confidence again.

That very first structured ballet was bought by a local dancer who went on to win Double world Ballet championships wearing it. From then on customers were knocking at the door!  Named after my granddaughter who we all called Daisy Do, then Do Tutu was created from my home studio.

From then on, demand has grown until I had to give up the ‘day job’ and make tutus full time.  I love what I do and enjoy the delight on the customers faces when they collect their tutu.

Collected my daughters tutu today and it’s absolutely stunning, my daughter went with ideas of how she wanted it to look and Kim worked hard to make it even better than what my daughter wished for, lovely lady and very talented. Thank you so much” – Denise

We travelled up to Hartlepool 3 times in total. I love how friendly and how welcoming she is and even found us really nice places to visit up there.as well as we live in West Yorkshire.  Kim is so in touch with young dancers and what they want. My little lady loves her and the incredible experience of having a one of a kind tutu made. I will and have recommended do tutu to my dance mum friends. and we will be using her again in the future. Xx”  -Kirsty

“Just collected a tutu Kim made for my 9-year-old daughter, we only told her the colour we wanted and left her to the design! Both myself and my daughter were blown away with what she created, we absolutely loved it! Kim is one very talented lady and I will definitely be using Do Tutu again in the future. Thanks again x” – Michelle
