Where are you in the Northeast? Newcastle upon Tyne

Hi!

Do you like your decorator to be; friendly, reasonable, reliable, tidy, fully insured and focused on your needs? If so look no further – we cover Newcastle and the North Tyneside area, interior & exterior, residential or commercial. For a free quote, give Sharon a call on 07977 743667

When did you start your business and why?: June 2016 – we had been renovating property for over 10 years by this stage and realized that we really enjoyed (and had a talent for) the painting and decorating side of things. We love the transformation painting a room brings.

What gives your business the edge?: We are very customer focused – and like to deliver a personalized service. rather than simply coming in with a quote, we like to discuss and consider our clients needs, from timing & timescales down to the finished look. This could include working evenings to minimize disruption to home/offices, doing tester pot samples in situ to ensure clients love the colour they`ve chosen, to simply being friendly and a pleasure to have around while the work is being done.

What is the best thing about running your own business?: The variety of jobs, working with lovely people, and managing our own diaries around our children.

And what is the worst?: Tax return! No question! lol

Describe a typical day running your business and balancing family life: Up at 7 to get the kids ready for school. Tim will usually head off to pick up his apprentice and start work around 8am. I am usually at network meetings doing quotes or meeting tenants during the day. I pick the kids up at 3.30pm. We usually eat together around 6pm. Then its kids time until 9pm when we either do our paperwork or just relax with an episode of a box set!

How do you envisage your business changing over the next 5 years?: Despite being relatively young, our business has proved a huge success and we are hoping to continue that into the future. Our dream is to expand our team of decorators who work for us and share our special ethos.

Do you have any advice for other Women in or starting a business?: Get out there and network – it can be lonely working for yourself and there is so much support and kindness out there, not to mention great business contacts!

My Big Day Bridal specialises in bespoke designed and made dresses, these include bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses, mother of the bride/groom outfits, flower girl dresses and veils

When did you start your business and why?:

2015 September, have always wanted to do something different, so doing bespoke made bridalwear mixed with Chinese bridalwear is a little something different in the north east of England!

What gives your business the edge?:

Its one of a kind in the north east, niche in the market with the Chinese bridalwear, but we also do bespoke designed and made bridalwear, so basically all our own brand and range

What is the best thing about running your own business?:

Meeting all the brides and bridesmaids and the wedding family, helping them find what they want

And what is the worst!?:

Customers comparing you to china ebay dresses! Its just not the same, they don’t give you the full service

Describe a typical day running your business and balancing family life:

Open shop, answer emails, lots of social media, consultations, fittings, design work, updating, home time, our day of is a Monday, so Monday is family day

How do you envisage your business changing over the next 5 years?:

I’m wanting to move to bigger better premises where we can concentrate on separate types of dresses and also have a bigger workspace and more chairs to sit as it seems that there are more and more bridesmaids nowadays!

Do you have any advice for other Women in or starting a business?:

Its very difficult to begin with and its hard to build the business up to a point where you start making a profit, its always good to have other sources in income to cover, but it does depend on what you do.

Am Robot is the work of Rowena, a part-time designer and full time mum of one. I have been in the design industry for 16 years working for clients from small businesses to large corporates and well known brands. I always loved drawing as a child, and I’ve always loved crafts from needle felting to pottery to woodwork. Professionally I offer design and motion graphics with a side step into more fine art and illustration once the wee one demands less of my time. I am able to take on projects and I’m happy to chat if you feel I may be able to help you with anything. Thanks for reading, enjoy!

When did you start your business and why?:

Started my business in 2010 after being made redundant. I thought it was a good time to try and go freelance and it worked!

What gives your business the edge?:

I have a friendly and hard working attitude that enables me to enjoy good working relationships. Clients know they can rely on me to get the work done.

What is the best thing about running your own business?:

The feeling of achievement you get when you deliver a good project to a happy client.

And what is the worst!?:

Lack of interaction with other people and long hours.

Describe a typical day running your business and balancing family life:

Usually I get the little one off to Nursery, and then I make a cuppa and begin to work through everything I need to get done. I break the screen time with bouts of cleaning and tidying. Before I know it I have to finish to pick up the little one, and then it’s the daily routine of dinner, bath and bedtime before relaxing for an hour or two.

How do you envisage your business changing over the next 5 years?:

I hope to enhance my skills in illustration so that I can begin to provide this as a service to others. I also endeavour to network with local businesses so that I can offer my services to a wider client base.

Do you have any advice for other Women in or starting a business?:

Believe in yourself and your ideas and have the confidence to follow your dreams.

I’m a qualified sex therapist and provide counselling for couples and individuals who are experiencing sexual difficulties.

When did you start your business and why?:

I was looking for something that was completely different and challenging, having worked in the same field for around 15 years, but where I could incorporate lots of existing skills. Sex therapy seemed like the perfect choice but I was sure if training actually existed in the UK. Luckily, I found a post grad course that was starting a couple of weeks later and the rest, as they say, is history

What gives your business the edge?:

I think to do this work, you really need to have the right personality.  I warm and welcoming but also quite edgy and street wise, so I suppose the thing that gives my business the edge is me.

What is the best thing about running your own business?:

There are probably too many to mention but I suppose the first things that spring to mind is the independence that being self employed gives you. But the greatest thing would have to be the clients that I work with and the incredible people I meet on a daily basis. Seeing their lives and relationships improve is unbelievably satisfying.

And what is the worst!?:

No holiday pay

Describe a typical day running your business and balancing family life:

My day can start from 8.30 and finish at 9pm one day and then I could work 11am until 5pm the next so I don’t have consistent hours. I tend to see around 5 -6 clients per day, for 1 hour per appointment. Sometimes those appointments will be with couples or with individuals, depending on their circumstances. I see all sorts of different people with different issues but the most common are loss of sex drive, erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation, porn and sex addiction.

My husband is self employed so he understands my strange working hours.

How do you envisage your business changing over the next 5 years?:

I’m starting the process of creating training for both pre and post graduate counsellors. In 5 years, I envisage having a successful training arm to my business

Do you have any advice for other Women in or starting a business?:

Take the risk.
